It has taken me a full week to let my emotions settle and take in the beauty that was the A Healthy U conference. For the past few months, I have been a bit silent with blogging but BUSY in life. As I shared , a while ago, I have been working with Nellie and Kimberly on our first inaugural health event, A Healthy U.
Well, as Nellie would jokingly put it, we have finally gone into to labor and baby A Healthy U conference was born last Saturday May 10 at 8:30am. The SOLD-OUT event took place at Studio Anya in NYC. The event featured two discussion panels and two fitness classes (zumba and yoga).
Planning this event has been such a humbling and wonderful experience for me for so many reasons. It’s truly hard to put into words the profound change this event has had on me, but I am going to try.
As I am writing this recap, I am happily reliving each moment of the day and it’s a great feeling.
To start, Nellie and Kimberly are two amazing women that I am so blessed and thankful to have in my life. We worked so well together that sometimes we would jokingly comment on how rare (sadly) it is sometimes for three women to work so well together with no DRAMA. We all had one or maybe two goals in mind and that was to make this event a success and to make sure people walked away with real tools they can apply to their life to jumpstart there healthy living journey.
The day started at 8:30am for registration and breakfast.
Nellie opened up the day and welcomed everyone and gave everybody a snap shot of what to expect of the day.
The first panel discussion was led by Kimberly, the session was themed “It’s All Connected!” The Importance of the mind, body and soul connection when it comes to getting fit. We all know that when it comes to getting fit, the mind sometimes is the hardest part to getting started.
The session featured amazing speakers including:
- Matthew Matheson, Personal Trainer/Body Builder
- Nadia Murdock, Author and Fitness Coach
- Don Sinkfield, LMHC
While I didn’t take notes because I was busy making sure everyone was having an awesome time, I did get some pics of Matthew demonstrating a HIIT workout for the group. That’s how we do it at A Healthy U, live demos! (I have video footage but I was having trouble uploading it.)
After a lively first session, we followed with a healthy snack break.
The second panel discussion was moderated by ME, the theme was “Eat Healthy Today: Tools, Tips and Tricks to help you start (or enhance) your healthy eating journey”. This session of course meant too much to me. We had an ah-mazing panelists for this session including:
- Melissa Burton, Registered Dietitian
- Dara Cooper, Director, NYC Food and Fitness Partnership
- Aletha Maybank, MD
- Valentina Rice, Founder, Many Kitchens
We talked about everything from how to demystify the trends and fad diets that are out there to how to eat healthy without breaking the bank. The conversation for both sessions could have gone on forever.
After our discussion panels, it was time for some movement. Prior to registering, people had to select which workout class they wanted to participate in, either zumba with Nellie or a yoga class led by one of the Studio Anya teachers. Both classes were jam-packed and a HUGE hit.
I personally participated in and out in the zumba class. I take Nellie’s zumba class in general and just love the energy and music she brings. I’ll let the photos and videos speak for themselves but zumba was FANTASTIC. The room was oozing with excitement and energy. 45 minutes of pure sweat and FUN. We even had a few kiddies participate.
After our movement classes, it was time for LUNCH. Everyone was starving after their workouts. Lunch was sponsored by United Health Care and featured gourmet boxed lunches from Panera Bread.
We announced our final winners for our giveaways, then thank everyone who came out for supporting us. The day surpassed our wildest dreams. It truly warmed my soul.
I want to thank all the sponsors who supported this event including Apera, Black Girls Run, BowFlex, Diets In Review, Eatrageous, Eden Body Works, Honest Tea, Kind Bars, OatWorks, The Partnership for a Healthier Brooklyn, United Healthcare, Wholly Guacamole, Zazzle.
Lastly, I want to give a huge thank you to my family who supported me whether it meant babysitting my daughter one night, helping to stuff gift bags, none of this would be possible if I didn’t have my family, my rock as my support.
When I started blogging about my healthy living journey, I never imagined (but quietly dreamed) about being so committed to healthy living and this experience further cemented my purpose in life and in my community.
A Healthy U conference will be back in 2015!
Have you ever planned an event before? What was your experience like? If you attended A Healthy U, we would love to hear from you?
